Let’s talk about first dates.

Not the awkward small talk. Not whether you should kiss at the end. And not whether you should text first afterwards.

Let’s talk about effort.

Because a first date is more than an opportunity to make a good impression. It’s a window into what life with this person could look like.

The way you dress, the place you choose, the effort you make and the way you show up are all little glimpses of who you are and how you approach dating.

And that’s worth paying attention to.

What are you wearing?

You don’t need to dress like you’re walking a red carpet.

You don’t need designer clothes, a brand-new outfit or anything that doesn’t feel like you. But you should look like you made an effort.

There’s a big difference between being casual and looking like you couldn’t be bothered.

Wear something that makes you feel attractive, confident and comfortable. Put some thought into it. Make sure you feel good when you walk through the door.

Because effort shows. And so does a lack of it.

If you turn up looking like you threw on whatever was closest to the door, you’re communicating something, whether you mean to or not.

And gentlemen, let’s make this very clear: this is the bare minimum.

  • Iron your shirt.
  • Clean your shoes.
  • Have a shower.
  • Get a haircut if you need one.
  • Trim your nails.
  • Wear something that actually fits you.

You don’t need to turn up looking like James Bond. But looking clean, well-groomed and like you cared enough to prepare for the date isn’t going above and beyond. It’s the starting point.

And ladies, same goes for you.

You don’t need to completely transform yourself or spend three hours getting ready. But if you want someone who takes pride in how they show up, make sure you’re doing the same.

Because you’re not trying to impress your date. You’re asking yourself:

“If this is how I want to show up in a relationship, is this how I want to show up on the first date?”

You’re not auditioning for a role. You’re showing someone a little bit of you.

Where you choose to go matters

This is where things get interesting.

The location you choose for your first date can tell someone a lot about your lifestyle, your preferences and the kind of relationship you might want.

Again, this isn’t about spending the most money. It’s about what your choice communicates.

Choose a beautiful, high-end restaurant and you’re potentially saying: “I enjoy luxury. I like good food, beautiful surroundings and a more elevated experience.”

Choose a gorgeous cocktail bar and you’re saying something slightly different: “I like going out. I enjoy good cocktails, nice places and a great atmosphere. I like experiences, but I don’t need everything to be overly formal.”

And then there’s: “Let’s just grab a coffee.”

Now, I have opinions about coffee dates. 😂

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with coffee. But if you’re choosing a quick coffee because you want to keep things short, cheap and low-commitment while you decide whether this person is “worth your time,” think about what you’re actually creating.

It can feel low effort. And more importantly, it can create a very different experience from someone who says:

“Let’s go somewhere nice, have a drink and actually spend some time getting to know each other.”

Neither person is necessarily wrong. But they’re showing you how they approach dating. And that’s useful information.

Your choices tell a story

Imagine you meet someone who consistently chooses beautiful restaurants, plans thoughtful experiences and takes pride in how they present themselves.

You might learn that they enjoy the finer things in life. Maybe they love going out, trying new places and creating experiences.

Now imagine someone whose idea of every first date is a quick coffee because they don’t want to invest too much until they know whether you’re worth it.

Again, neither person is automatically better. But they may have very different lifestyles and expectations around dating.

That’s the point.

Your first date isn’t just about whether someone finds you attractive. It’s an opportunity to see:

  • Do we enjoy the same things?
  • Do we have similar standards?
  • Do we approach relationships in a way that feels compatible?
  • Could I actually see myself enjoying life with this person?

Effort isn’t about money

This is important.

Effort does not equal expensive.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on dinner to demonstrate that you’re interested.

Effort is thoughtfulness.

It’s choosing somewhere because you think you’ll both enjoy it.

It’s putting some thought into what you’re wearing.

It’s arriving on time.

It’s being present.

It’s asking questions and actually listening.

It’s creating an environment where you can relax, connect and have fun.

And here’s the biggest thing:

Don’t put in effort simply because you want them to choose you. Put in effort because that’s how you want to show up in your dating life. Then pay attention to whether they meet you there.

You’re not trying to win them over

I think this is where dating gets complicated.

We can become so focused on “Do they like me?” that we forget to ask: “Do I like them?”

A first date isn’t a job interview where you’re trying to convince someone you’re the best candidate. It’s two people meeting to see whether there is something worth exploring.

So yes, put on the outfit that makes you feel amazing. Choose somewhere you genuinely enjoy. Make an effort. Bring your best energy.

But don’t perform. Show them who you are.

Because ultimately, you’re not trying to create a version of yourself that someone will fall for. You’re trying to find someone who likes the person you actually are.

So, what does your first date say about you?

Before your next date, ask yourself:

  • What does my outfit say about how I show up?
  • What does my choice of venue say about the lifestyle I enjoy?
  • What kind of experience am I creating?
  • Am I putting in effort because I genuinely want to, or because I’m trying to earn someone’s approval?

And most importantly:

If every date looked like this, would I actually enjoy the relationship it was creating?

Because your first date isn’t a contract for the relationship. But it is a window into what life with this person could look like.

And sometimes, that window tells you everything you need to know.
